Director, John Savournin, has set this 150th anniversary production in the world of 1980's television game-shows. Designer, takis, has given us all the joy and hilarity of the 1980's in this wonderful reimagining of Trial by Jury, with all the energy of a television studio with an excitable audience. This production forms the first part of a double-bill with it's companion piece, A Matter of Misconduct, which was specially commissioned by D'Oyly Carte Opera and Scottish Opera. This double bill is available to stream online at OperaVision.eu, free, for a limited period.
learn moreRichard D'Oyly Carte was the manager at the Royalty Theatre in Dean Street, Soho, in London's West End (a theatre that is sadly no more). He was the first producer to put both William S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan together to collaborate on their first one-act light opera. Both Gilbert and Sullivan were already well know for their individual works and collaborations with others, but this inspired pairing gave birth to a musical legacy the survives to the present day and will for centuries to come.
D'Oyly Carte favourite, Richard Suart, leads an energetic company, as the Learned Judge, with Kira Kaplan as the Plaintiff, and Jamie MacDougal as the Defendant. Cnloe Harris, features as a stern and formidable Counsel for the Plaintiff, and Edward Jowel, starts the evening as a floor manager who segways into his role as the Usher.
Trial by Jury opened at 10.15pm on 25th March 1875 at the tiny Royalty Theatre in Dean Street, as part of a triple bill which included a romantic extravaganza with the unpronounceable title of ‘Cryptoconchoidsyphonostomata’, and Offenbach’s ‘La Perichole’.
