With Trial by Jury being a one-act opera it is often presented as part of a double-bill with another opera, either as a curtain-raiser, or as an after-piece. We took the opportunity to commission a brand new contemporary satirical operetta to serve as a companion piece to Trial by Jury. At D'Oyly Carte Opera, we believe that the genre of satirical light opera and operetta is an important aspect of our shared cultural heritage in British theatre, and it has been sadly neglected in recent times. This season with Scottish Opera, gave us the perfect opportunity to put this right and to pick up where Gilbert and Sullivan left off. Emma Jenkins and Toby Hession have given us the perfect response to this challenge. Together, they have sharpened their satirical claws and focussed their lens on the murky world of press briefings and public relations in Downing Street, resulting in hilarity and embarrassment for all involved. Together with Trial by Jury, the entire double bill is available to view by streaming it on online at OperaVision.eu for free for a limited period.
